CYF delegates provide recommendations to Heads of Government

The delegates of the Commonwealth Youth Forum have urged Commonwealth leaders to support the establishment of an independent youth led governing body to oversee the administration of a youth development fund in the communiqué to Heads of Government.

The recommendation was provided with supporting principles at the Commonwealth Youth Forum (CYF) Closing Ceremony on Thursday 27 October in Fremantle, Western Australia.

The recommendation is explained in this excerpt from the communiqué:

We recommend the following:

  • That the Commonwealth Heads of Government support the establishment of an independent youth led governing body to oversee the administration of a youth development fund.

Our core recommendation initiative reflects a desire for young people to be active participants in the call to action which can be achieved through initiating the above-mentioned governing body, as well as addressing and implementing the supporting recommendations below. This partnership is an acknowledgment of the shared responsibility between the CHOG, its Member States and the Commonwealth youth.

We ask Commonwealth governments to support the drafting of Guidelines for Governance for national youth structures, designed by young people across all Commonwealth nations within one year of the CYF 2011 Communiqué.

The core recommendation were supported by a suite of sub recommendations listed under the five key themes of CYF2011:

  • Youth impact and participation in decision making
  • Peace building and conflict management
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Health
  • Youth enterprise, ICT, Sustainable Livelihoods and the Economy.

The communiqué was presented to Commonwealth Deputy Secretary General, Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba and the Local Member assisting the Australian Minister of Youth, Melissa Parke.

The Closing Ceremony brought to a close 5 days of discussions for delegates of CYF 2011.

CYF2011 gave delegates a unique opportunity  to provide recommendations to heads of government, but also equipped the delegates with skills and knowledge to go home and mobilise young people to take action at a local level.
