Congratulations to National Awards for Local Government Winners

Congratulations to National Awards for Local Government Winners

The winners of the Youth Engagement Category for the 2011 National Awards for Local Government have been announced.

Congratulations to both Melbourne’s Moonee Valley City Council, and Circular Head Council in north-west Tasmania, winners of the Youth Engagement Category.

Both Moonee Valley City Council and Circular Head Council have demonstrated the important role local governments can play in connecting young people to their communities and helping them achieve their potential.

Moonee Valley’s Sustainable Employment and Economic Development (SEED) Youth Project has delivered sustainable employment and training outcomes for young people, through a holistic, coordinated model for youth engagement.

Small council winner, Circular Head Council, created the Seven Up Youth Centre in partnership with young people. The Youth Centre has resulted in tangible benefits for young people in a small rural community who did not have access to a youth specific service.

The category winners will now be considered for the overall 2011 National Award for Excellence in Local Government. In the coming weeks an independent panel will determine which of the category winners will receive the 2011 Award for Excellence.
The recipients of the 2011 National Award for Excellence in Local Government will be announced in late June 2011.

The National Awards for Local Government recognise, reward and promote the innovative work of local governments across Australia. The National Awards are an important component of the Government's partnership with local government, showcasing unique local solutions to common problems. The Youth Engagement category of the Awards is sponsored by the Office for Youth in the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
