The 2012 State and Territory recipients for the Young Australian of the Year have been announced. Congratulations to the finalists and to all those nominated for this inspirational award. The finalists will now be considered for the national Young Australian of the Year Award, which will be announced on 25 January 2012, as part of the Australia Day celebrations.

I often consider myself very lucky for having the opportunity to be part of an initiative like the AYF. The AYF for me so far has been about outcomes - about hearing the ideas of young people put to the table and these ideas not only being heard by the Australian Government, but also taken up.

Australia’s non-government youth affairs peak, Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC), is currently coordinating a youth sector conference. The conference, Interrupting Transmission: youth | change | policy | practice, is being held from 30 May to 1 June 2011. Planning for the conference is well under way and AYAC have confirmed some great speakers, including Simon McKeon, this year’s Australian of the Year, and Jan Owen, CEO of the Foundation for Young Australians.

In all honesty, a lot of young people wouldn’t think it’s cool to share their opinion on big issues like foreign policy, high school curriculum and climate change. A lot of young people today will even keep quiet about issues that affect them in their very own cities like Indigenous policy, sexuality or financial problems. But if we really think about it, if we as a group remain silent then who is going to be in control of our future?

My journey began on February 9, 2011.
I’m sitting in the shuttle bus on my way down to Sydney Airport, looking like the cat from Alice in Wonderland, massive smiles on my face and just keen to be down at Canberra already. In my head I’m thinking ‘Who from Umina gets the chance to be on the AYF Youth Engagement Steering Committee?’ I then realise I’ve said it out loud. The bus driver must have thought I was a complete psycho.

The Australian Constitution is the foundation document of Australia’s system of government, but doesn’t currently recognise Indigenous Australians. As announced by Prime Minister Gillard, on 8 November 2010, recognising Indigenous Australians in the Constitution is an important step in Australia’s journey towards closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
