National Conversation Launch

National Conversation Launch at Lyneham High School – 22 October 2009

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and the Hon Kate Ellis MP, Minister for Early Childhood Education, Child Care and Youth, launched a nationwide consultation process to talk with young people about the National Strategy for Young Australians.

The National Conversation provides an opportunity for young people and those involved in the youth sector, to air their views through a series of online events, local and national forums, as well as face-to-face discussions.

The National Conversation was launched simultaneously by the Prime Minister, hosting an online forum at Parliament House, and Minister Ellis in person at the Lyneham High School in Canberra.

Lyneham High Year 9-10 students formed into four discussion groups to consider some of the priorities for the National Conversation. After the students reported back from their discussions, they also Tweeted the PM who was online at the Parliament House for the PM’s Web Chat on Young Australians. You can read the transcript of the PM’s Web Chats on the PM’s website.

Three announcements were also made during the launch:

  1. The report release of The State of Australia's Young People: a report on the social, economic, health and family lives of young people

  2. $10 million to set up five new youth community centres across Australia, which was one of the top ten ideas at the 2020 Youth Summit in April 2008

  3. Challenging Australia's young people for fresh ideas through the Prime Minister's Australian Youth Forum Challenge
