AYF Events and Activities
The AYF holds a variety of events and activities to encourage communication with and between young people, the youth sector and the Australian Government. There are:
- Ideas Board topics,
- youTHINK,
- Outreach,
- National Conversation,
- Partnership, sponsorship and promotional events and activities.
Ideas Board topics
Online discussion topics are hosted on the AYF website. The topics align with
AYF events, Australian Government consultations and other significant issues for
young people. Give your input the current Ideas
Board topics.
youTHINK events
youTHINK is AYF’s nationally attended forum created by young Australians for
young Australians through consultation with the AYF Steering Committee. The
youTHINK forum is designed to encourage young people to, not only speak out on
important issues, but to also exchange practical solutions. Have a look at the
AYF’s youTHINK events.
Outreach forums
The Outreach forums are where the Hon Kate Ellis MP, Minister for Youth, visits
a group of young people in their local communities. Discussion topics can range
from local to national issues and they are a great way to brainstorm ideas and
get your voice heard directly in the Minister’s ear. Check out the previous AYF
Outreach forums and what was discussed.
National Conversation
The AYF hosted the National Conversation with young people and the broader
community during October and November 2009. The purpose was to inform the
development of the Australian Government’s National Strategy for Young
Australians. All input from previous AYF events and online topics was also
provided. The National Strategy for Young Australians was released on 14 April
2010 and guide for future Government action to encourage and help young people
take charge of their own lives. Read more about the
National
Strategy for Young Australians.
The National Conversation reached a wide range of key stakeholders through a number of different channels, such as online events, live web chats, host your own forums, national and local forums and targeted face-to-face roundtable discussions. The national youTHINK: live & online forum was webcast across Australia on 19 November 2009 and allowed viewers to contribute their opinions during the webcast. Other Activities
INITIATE the Future conference by AIESEC
On 9 July 2010, the AYF was involved in AIESEC’s INITIATE the Future youth leadership conference. The AYF workshop invited participants to tell the AYF what they think about some issues that matter to young people. Many ideas were shared by the participants on the topics of body image, enrolling to vote and the portrayal of young people in the media. Participants were encouraged to continue their conversation with the AYF. The AYF also had an information stall at the conference.
Read more about the conference and what participants had to say.
Count Me In! enrolment to vote initiative
Voting is your way to directly influence what happens with the
Australian Government. The United Nations Youth Association (UNYA) understands
how important it is to enrol to vote.
“Count Me In!” enrolment to vote initiative, supported by the AYF, urged young
people to enrol to vote.
Visit UNYA’s Count Me In!
website or join the
Count Me In! facebook page.
Linkz Laramba Engagement and Consultation Workshop
Linkz is a not for profit organisation that connects Indigenous and
non-Indigenous Australians at both a local community level and also on a broader
scale. The AYF has partnered with Linkz to engage with Indigenous young people
living in remote areas and gain first-hand insight into some of the key issues
occurring at a community level. The remote community of Laramba in the Northern
Territory will be documenting the ‘Dreams and Frustrations’ of young people
through a range of mediums including conversation, photography and artwork.

more about the work of Linkz, visit their website.
Young Australian of the Year
The Australian Youth Forum is proud to be the major sponsor of the Young
Australian of the Year Award. This award celebrates the amazing achievements and
accomplishments of young people across Australia - the AYF believe it is
important to recognise the commitment and passion of these young Australians.
The Oaktree Foundation’s 2010 Make Poverty History Roadtrip and Summit
On Saturday 8 May 2010, 1,000 young people embarked on a nationwide week-long
road trip to help end extreme poverty. The AYF partnered with the Oaktree
Foundation to support the Roadtrip and hold an AYF Youth Consultation Forum with
the 1,000 ambassadors. Read more on the Oaktree webpage.
National Youth Week 2010
National Youth Week (NYW) 2010 was launched on Saturday 10 April simultaneously
in Parramatta (NSW) and Victor Harbor (SA). This year, the AYF is a NYW partner,
sponsoring the “DesignIT” National Talent Competition for graphic design. The
theme for DesignIT 2010 is ‘Share Our World’, which encourages young people to
show everyone about what’s important to them in their world. Check out the AYF
at the NYW launch and get more info about NYW.
Triple J and Alice Spring’s One Night Stand Concert
On Saturday 27 March, the AYF took part in Alice Springs’ One Night Stand free
concert hosted by Triple J and the Alice Springs Town Council. The AYF’s
“Friends Meeting Place” marquee provided water, lollipops and a chance for young
people to express what’s important to them. See what young people in Alice
Spring shared...
