Response to Commemoration of the Anzac Centenary Discussion Topic
Thank you very much to those of you who provided us with posts about how to commemorate the Anzac centenary.
Your comments were most interesting and highlighted the important contribution that young people can make to mark this important milestone in Australia’s history. The comments you provided will be given to the National Commission on the Commemoration of the Anzac Centenary to inform their public consultation process.
A number of the ideas focused upon events of remembrance to mark the occasion appropriately and respectfully for all Australians. Ideas included a combined Australian and New Zealand memorial service, local “Memory Walks” and a “People’s March”. One contributor believed the centenary provided renewed opportunities for young and older Australians to work together to mark the centenary through organisations such as the RSL and Legacy. One respondent suggested that a documentary be commissioned for educative purposes as well as to honour all veterans and capture the wider community celebrations. Another idea was the use of time capsule ceremonies at the foot of Australian flags to honour the service and heritage of Australia’s past.
Once again thank you for taking the time to share your views and read the response about this important event in our history. Response to Enrolling to Vote Discussion Topic
Thank you very much for providing us with your posts and votes regarding the issue of Enrolling to Vote. Your contributions will help to inform the Australian Electoral Commission on ways to better engage young people in the voting system.
The better use of online technology to enrol to vote was also supported and you indicated that it may be a significant factor in increasing the engagement of young people. Some of you also felt that the twenty four hour post election announcement cut-off time to enrol to vote did not provide many young people with enough opportunity to enrol to vote.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to share your views and read the response about Enrolling to Vote. If you would like further information regarding this topic, check out the latest information at the Australian Electoral Commission.
Response to Disability Care and Support Discussion Topic
Thank you very much for providing us with your views on Disability Care and Support. Your contributions will help inform the Productivity Commission’s inquiry on a long-term disability care and support scheme.
Your comments and votes acknowledged the role that Centrelink has in supporting those with disabilities and suggested that an improvement in the engagement with Centrelink may be beneficial to those seeking care and support. Your comments also recognised the importance of enabling young people to be ‘independent, autonomous and respected’ to empower them to live fulfilled lives.
Comments were also made on other areas for consideration in a new Disability Care and Support scheme, such as:
- enabling State Governments to take more responsibility in tailoring and providing support;
- implementing a voluntary buddy system in schools to support those with disabilities; and
- an innovative idea to link young people in juvenile justice with helping support people with disabilities.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to share your views and to read the response about Disability Care and Support. If you would like more information regarding this topic, you may wish to check out the latest information on the Productivity Commission website.
