National Career Development Strategy Launched

On 23 May 2013, the Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth, the Hon Peter Garrett AM MP, released the National Career Development Strategy.

Each year, the Australian Government appoints a young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Representative to be part of the National Planning Group for National Youth Week.

YMCA of Canberra ACT Youth Parliament

Applications for the 2013 YMCA of Canberra ACT Youth Parliament are now open to young people between the ages of 15-25 who are interested in youth issues, social change and governance. The YMCA ACT Youth Parliament program is a unique and exciting event for young people between 15-25 years of age. The program includes an overnight camp on 11-12 May and a week-long residential camp between 8-12 July, where participants are involved in drafting, debating and passing bills in the ACT Legislative Assembly. Application forms will be available to be accessed and submitted online from Monday 4th March until Friday 3rd May 2013 at: http://www.canberra.ymca.org.au/services/yp

Peel Supporting Youth Forum

The Supporting Youth Forum aims to create an entertaining and inter-active forum which gives school support staff and students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with agencies, employment and services available to them within the community for young people.

The Supporting Youth Forum will also allow interagency collaboration between the different services and agencies within the sector with the aim of developing networks and relationships to help create collaborative solutions that could service all agencies that support young people.

This year the forum will allow the students to access a job board with vacancies within the Peel Region and talk to Apprenticeship centres and employment agencies.

Indigenous Communities Education and Awareness (ICEA) Foundation Classic Program

ICEA (Indigenous Communities Education and Awareness) Foundation is a youth run not-for-profit organisation that has been operating in Western Australia since 2007. ICEA's purpose is 'reconciliation inspired by young people' and all our programs work together to build mutual respect between young Australians.

We have three core programs, the Marja Mob, the Remote Communities Incentives Program and the Waves Program. On August 31st, ICEA will be hosting the ICEA Classic, which will be our organisation’s biggest event for the year. The Classic is one of three aspects of the ICEA Waves Program. Young people who have been learning to surf as part of the Waves Summer Series and Winter Series get a chance to showcase their new skills in the Classic, a surf competition at ‘The Cove’, south of Cottesloe beach.

In 2012, the Classic attracted over 2000 spectators and we hope to draw over 5000 this year. We anticipate that over 100 young Indigenous people from local high schools will be in attendance, as well as many non-Indigenous students and teachers and ICEA supporters from all cultural backgrounds.

The event will run for four and a half hours and will comprise of cultural activities on the beach, an intense surfing competition and lots of healthy food from a variety of different cultures. The purpose of the event is to promote reconciliation and respect within the local community. More information is available at the ICEA Foundation website.
