Learn about occupations and industries to find the career that’s right for you.
A 'career' is all the different professional experiences that you have in your life. It includes your:
- education and training
- family and community roles
- paid and unpaid work.
An ‘occupation’ is what you do for a job.
You may work in many different occupations over your career.
An ‘industry’ is a group of jobs that work together to make a particular product, for example:
- the fast-food industry
- the plumbing industry
- the tourism industry.
You may work in many different industries over your career.
Choosing a career pathway
It’s okay if you are unsure about what you want to do in your career. There are lots of resources that can show you the different types of jobs that are out there.

At a job expo you can find out about jobs and training opportunities.
Like a market, there are many stalls with information about different kinds of jobs. Employers at these stalls will answer any questions you have.

Workforce AustraliaIf you are between 15 and 24 years old, you can access a Youth Advisory Session through Workforce Australia. These can help you:
- find a job
- get ready for a career
- connect with education and training.
You can access up to 3 one-hour, one-on-one meetings with a youth specialist provider.
Find a youth specialist providerIf you are at school, reach out to your school’s counsellor or careers advisor. They can provide advice on your career pathway.
If you are at university or TAFE, reach out to the careers hub or service centre.
You may be eligible for a Workforce Australia program like Transition to Work. Participants get help with:
- growing their skills
- finding local jobs
- writing resumes and preparing for interviews
- connecting with community services.
