Social media age restrictions

Here you will find information about the new social media minimum age restrictions.

What are the social media age restrictions?

From 10 December 2025, many social media platforms won’t be allowed to let Australians under 16 create or keep accounts.

The law has been created to protect young people from features that encourage spending too much time on screens and show content that can be harmful to overall health and wellbeing. Restricting access aims to protect young people from these risks.

The aim is to give young people more time to build emotional, social, and digital skills before creating social media accounts.

This law is not about banning social media, it’s about giving everyone extra time to grow and learn how to stay safe online.

What platforms are impacted?

For current information about which social media platforms are restricted, check out the eSafety 'which platforms are age-restricted?' page.

If you are under 16, you will still be able to see publicly available social media content that doesn’t require logging into an account. This means you can still search for and watch videos, read posts and find information as long as the platform you’re using allows access without logging in.

Where can I get support?

This is a big change, and you might be worried about how it could affect you. It is important to remember you are not alone.

If you’re feeling confused, isolated, or unsure about where to turn, help is available. You can find more information about accessing support services on eSafety’s ‘I need help’ page.
