In the 2025 National Youth Survey Summary Report, housing affordability and cost of living were identified as two of the top issues for young people living in Australia today.
There are Australian Government support services available to support you, whether you’re looking to buy your first place or access a rental.
If you’re looking to rent:
- Rent Assistance is a regular payment from Services Australia that can help eligible people with rent or housing costs.
If you’re looking to buy:
- First Home Super Saver Scheme, administered by the Australian Taxation Office, helps you save a deposit for your first home through super.
- The Help to Buy Scheme could help you to purchase a home with a lower deposit and a smaller mortgage, with the Australian Government contributing to the purchase price of your home.
- The 5% Deposit Scheme could enable you to purchase sooner with a lower deposit.
In May 2026, the Australian Government released Homes for Australia: A National Plan, investing $47 billion to improve housing across the country. The plan aims to make housing fairer, more affordable and easier to understand.
Support specifically for young people includes more support for first-home buyers, stronger protections for renters, more safe and secure long-term rentals, and earlier help for young people who are at risk of homelessness.
