The Australian Government is supporting young people to get a degree or qualification by providing a range of opportunities to subsidise your studies.
This means, the government will provide financial support by paying part of your fees.
We explore just some of the types of supports available to help you:
Free-Fee TAFE
The Australian Government is working with states and territories to fund 500,000 fee-free TAFE and VET placements across Australia through the Fee-Free TAFE Skills Agreement.
Fee-free TAFE places are available in a range of study areas, including:
- Agriculture
- Care, including aged care, childcare, health care and disability care
- Construction
- Hospitality and tourism (and more).
Access is prioritised for target cohorts, including First Nations Australians and young people aged 17 to 24.

Commonwealth Prac Payment
The Commonwealth Prac Payment offers teaching, nursing, midwifery and social work students financial support while they’re undertaking mandatory placements.
The payment (CPP) offers $338.60 per week to eligible students, benchmarked to the single Austudy rate on 1 January each year.
To apply for the payment, contact your higher education provider and make sure to check out the Department of Education’s website for more information.
Higher Education Loan Program
The Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) provides financial support for students, helping Australians get a university degree.
A HELP loan is when you borrow money from the government, for your studies, that you’ll repay later. It allows eligible students to study without having to pay upfront fees to their university or higher education provider.
There are 4 types of HELP loans:
1. HECS-HELP is for students enrolled in a CSP
2. FEE-HELP covers some or all tuition fees when enrolled in a full fee-paying place
3. SA-HELP covers the student services and amenities fee
4. OS-HELP supports CSP students doing an overseas exchange as part of their course.
You can apply for a HELP loan through your university or education provider once you’re enrolled in a course.
