Creating inclusive and safe sporting opportunities for young people is vital to ensure greater participation in sport, and we’re super excited to see this progressed by the 2026 Sports Participation Youth Advisory Group.
The group have already had an awesome start to the year, coming together during Youth Meets Parliament Week in March to discuss their upcoming priorities for the year!
These priorities include:
- Supporting the delivery of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC)’s Play Well Strategy to help create safe, welcoming and inclusive sporting experiences for young people
- Exploring how sporting organisations can better engage and communicate in authentic and age-appropriate ways
- Supporting accessible sport opportunities for young people living regionally, rurally, or with disability, and
- Removing barriers to participation.
The ASC support the development of Australia’s sport sector by building capability, advancing sport facilities, and inspiring Australians to get involved.
What is the Play Well Strategy?
The Play Well Strategy was created to generate greater access, experiences and sporting environments for everyone - no matter your age, background, gender or ability.
Young people who are members of a local sporting club are more likely to:
- demonstrate greater trust in other people
- feel a stronger sense of belonging in their community
- build closer friendships
- have higher life satisfaction, happiness and health, and
- have a greater desire to give back to their community through volunteering.
To support the release of the Play Well Strategy, the Australian Government and ASC have invested $10.3 million in funding through the Play Well Participation Grant to encourage more people to get active and enjoy the benefits of sport. Funding will be shared at a national and local level to encourage participation and support equitable access.
We’re really excited for the upcoming collaboration between the advisory group and ASC to drive outcomes in sport across the country - check out the members representing you.
